Piggyback Forklift

A piggyback forklift is a material handling unit that operates like a conventional forklift to move products. The difference between a conventional forklift and piggyback forklift is that a piggyback forklift is capable of mounting on the back of a truck or trailer without taking up the cargo area.

What Can the Piggyback Forklift Do

A piggyback forklift is more suited to mobile delivery operations because it weighs much less than a conventional forklift. This is achieved by having a mast carriage mechanism within the front frame area that allows the fork mast to move back-and-forth, thereby changing the lifting mast to be closer to the center of gravity of the unit. This same mast carriage helps a piggyback forklift pick itself up, and position itself on the back of a truck or trailer, for secure mounting.

A vehicle has to be set up to carry a piggyback forklift, it cannot mount on just any truck or trailer. There must also be a mounting kit installed within the back of the truck or trailer. Generally, piggyback forklifts lift and carry an average of 5,000-5,500 pounds, this size of the machine weighs from 5,000 to 7,000 pounds. This makes it much lighter than a conventional counterbalance forklift, which typically weighs double what its lifting capacity is. There are models as small as 3,000 LBS capacity and up to 8,000 LBS.
